The dragon lay motionless as a strange calm took hold across the land. I sheathed my sacred sword and stood dumbfounded by the grace that had granted me victory, but from my place I couldn’t move. I could only but stare at the lifeless beast.
Was this it?
With great hesitation I walked towards the beast. Its eyes still open in shock and awe. I looked into the beast’s eyes and saw not a monster, but myself. Perhaps that is what I had been fighting all along. The tears rushed to my eyes. Never have I felt so free.
I closed its eyes and kissed its snout, thanking it for all it had done, and bid it a fond farewell. I had dwelled in that field for too long, and now was the time to rise and walk. I did not know where the road would take me, I simply knew that I had to continue forward.
“I will miss you,” I thought to myself. “but I must go on. There is still so much more to this story that I must discover.”
